CuNiGuard®

Boatylicious are pleased to announce that we now offer CuNiGuard® services within the South coast.

Marine Technology LTD recently exhibited at the PSP Southampton Boatshow, with their new and exciting CuNiGuard® product, an antifouling system that utilises copper-nickel to provide a multiseason antifouling formula which can last for up to 10 years – saving £££’s!

For more details, please contact us or use the Booking Form to make an enquiry.

Below is detail on the CuNiGuard® antifouling system. If you have any questions please contact us.

MAIN FEATURES

CuNiGuard® using a very precise mix of copper nickel (CuNi) it is very efficient and eco-friendly for use as a marine antifoul, where high efficiency, low maintenance and longevity is desirable.

Copper nickel provides virtually unmatched bio-fowling protection and has been proven to perform well under the most stringent of conditions. Which is well suited as a marine antifouling but is also intended for industrial applications on marine structures, it can be successfully applied to GRP, wood, plastic, concrete and even rope netting.

CuNiGuard® makes use of copper nickel alloy which has been proven to offer a high natural resistance to bio-fouling and yet offers a much slower rate of erosion than copper alone would do.

CuNiGuard® can be considered one of the most effective antifouling systems available. Upon immersion the copper oxide film present on the CuNiGuard® outer layer will react with the salt water to form a surface covering of Cupros Oxide . This layer whilst not toxic creates an inhospitable environment for most marine life forms. CuNiGuard® is professionally applied by a registered installer.

CuNiGuard® copper granules provide 100% coverage to the surface area continuously, thereby ensuring maximum bio protect. Unlike other antifouling systems that use copper granules suspended in resin which require frequent abrasion to bring the copper granules to the surface.

CuNiGuard® granules are non conductive because the small contact area between each particle (the branley effect) create a high electrical resistance, as a result of this electrical resistance the CuNiGuard® coating is non conductive and therefore will not promote the risk of galvanic degradation or electrolysis.

ADVANTAGES

High Performance – CuNiGuard® utilises the well documented properties of copper to provide the most effective antifouling protection available.

Low Maintenance – Compared with traditional antifouling paints which need regular application and can begin to foul within months, CuNiGuard® remains free from macro fouling year after year without the need for sanding or re-coating. Occasionally slime may form on the surface; however, this is removed while underway.

Long Life – The copper nickel outer layer of CuNiGuard® is virtually non corrodible in sea water. The corrosion rate of CuNiGuard® cupronickel alloy has been determined to be between 1.3µ and 7µ per annum. It is applied at 150-200µ thickness, giving CuNiGuard® one of the longest life spans available on the market. All components within the CuNiGuard® system are designed to perform in excess of 20 years, providing excellent long-term protection.

Environmentally Friendly – Reduced fuel consumption reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions. CuNiGuard®’s low leaching rate also ensures minimal environmental impact. CuNiGuard® does not contain TBT’s or organic biocides. CuNiGuard® is fully approved by the HSE.

Flexible – CuNiGuard® can be applied to GRP steel and many other substrates. CuNiGuard® is compatible with most high performance coating systems.

Unique – CuNiGuard® is a unique fouling control system developed by Marine Technology Ltd, which can be applied by most professional painting contractors after onsite training by Marine Technology Ltd technical staff.
Trials – Long term research undertaken have confirmed the efficacy and benefits of the CuNiGuard® system.
Non Leaching CuNiGuard® is classified as non leaching this highly effective antifoling is considerably kinder to the environment than the self eroding competitors whilst continuing to deter growth year after year. When applied by one of our trained installers it will resist weed and barnacle growth for many years.

Approved by the Health & Safety Executive, the system has been tested and complies with UK and EU Law, and holds its own HSE Certificate Number. It is fully approved for use within the marine environment.

How It Works

On contact with sea water the exposed CuNiGuard® copper layer reacts causing the formation of a layer of cuprous oxide which is well documented for its antifouling qualities. CuNiGuard® utilises copper nickel alloy (CuNi) as opposed to pure copper, this is due to the fact that copper nickel will erode within sea water at a far slower rate than that of copper alone and yet they both have a similar effect with regard to their antifouling qualities. As an added advantage the epoxy coating used as a binder for the copper nickel coating will aid in waterproofing the GRP hull further which will offer extra protection against osmosis in a GRP craft and likewise will offer extra protection against corrosion in a steel craft. We have undertaken extensive conductivity tests and due to the nature of the copper nickel suspended in the epoxy binder, CuNiGuard® will not cause cathodic decay or electrolysis problems.

REINVENTING THE WHEEL

Using copper as an antifouling media is nothing new. Complete cladding with copper of the underwater hull of a ship had been first used on HMS Alarm in 1761 to prevent attack of the wooden hull by the Teredo worm in tropical waters. The copper was also found to reduce bio fouling of the hull very significantly which gave ships a great advantage of speed when compared with those dragging round a vast growth of marine weed.
